Leave The Trumpet At Home

November 29, 2020 Speaker: Jim Harris Series: Sermon on the Mount

Scripture: Matthew 6:1–4

As we move from chapter 5 to chapter 6, there is a slight change of emphasis but no change of subject. The continued subject is true righteousness, and the continued technique Jesus uses is to contrast genuine righteousness with the works-righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. The new emphasis is that He switches from talking about what to believe to talking about what to practice. He teaches that living the righteous life is a matter of consistent, heart-motivated obedience to the rule love God above all and love your neighbor as yourself.

There are three illustrations of religious activity in 6:1-18: Giving (1-4), praying (6-15) and fasting (16-18).  Today we focus on giving.

  1. The General Principle (1)
  2. How Not To Give (2)
  3. How To Give (3)
  4. Why To Give (4)
