The Flesh (Death) or the Spirit (Life)

We tend to complicate things that are meant to be simple, sometimes to the point where the point we are trying to make becomes so convoluted that no one understands what we are trying to convey. The simple point of the passage before us is that if you are in Christ by faith, the Holy Spirit dwells in you to lead and empower you to live in a manner pleasing to Him. If you are not in Christ there is nothing you can do that is pleasing to Him and all your righteous deeds are “filthy rags” in that regard.
