The keynote for 5:22-6:9 is Ephesians 5:21: . . . and being subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Being subject to one another means voluntarily ordering your life under those around you so as to be an instrument of God to meet their needs. See also Philippians 2:3-4. In Matthew 20:25-28 Jesus famously described His own example: . . . just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.
